University of Kansas SPE Student Chapter
We are the student profesional society of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).
Membership is made up of undergraduate and graduate students. Activities include meetings with speakers from industry, participation in the annual School of Engineering EXPO and field trips.
We annually take a group to the SPE national meeting, with most of the expenses paid by funds from the Department of Chemical and Petroleum and School of Engineering.
Last year we spent a day at the Weiss Energy Center in Hourson on the way to the national meeting in San Antonio.

The visit to the Energy Center was sponsored by Occidental Petroleum.
In the spring we took a major field trip to the Woodford Shale tight gas play in southeastern Oklahoma. The trip was sponsored by Devon Oil. We visited a drilling rig where a horizontal well was being drilled and the site of a major fracture job in a horizontal well.
