Thinking of majoring in Petroleum Engineering?
The Petroleum undergraduate program was designed with more than just bookwork in mind. Because of our close working relationship with major industry leaders, by the time they graduate most of our undergraduates have had internships and genuine field experience. Combining these opportunities with our newly renovated labs and fieldtrips for direct hands on knowledge results in a world class education
Undergraduate Research in Petroleum Engineering
The University of Kansas is committed to providing research experiences to undergraduate students as part of the educational process. It is a stated goal of KU that each graduating student should have a research experience. The Department is very much in support of this goal.
We have an in house Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program and also operate an NSF funded REU program. Most of our students do their research experience at KU, but we also have programs at overseas locations (Germany, Holland). The REU programs are summer programs and generally pay $ 5000 for a 10 week summer experience. Many of our students also perform research during their regular academic semesters. We allow up to 6 credits of research towards the undergraduate degree.
Scholarships in Petroleum Engineering
We are fortunate to have a large scholarship programs in Petroleum Engineering. This coupled with low tuition and fees combine to make KU very affordable. Over 75% of our students are on scholarship support from the Department. Our awards range from $ 2000 - $ 5000 per year and are generally renewable for up to 4 years ( 5 years if you have a semester abroad).
In addition, scholarships are available from the School of Engineering and the University of Kansas office of student financial aid. Many of our students receive scholarship support from all three sources. Please feel free to contact us if you have questions about scholarship availability. We can usually provide you with an offer within a day or two.
