Thinking of majoring in Chemical Engineering?

Chemical engineering is a challenging field that will require all of your energy and abilities. Mathematical analysis is involved in every course, as is critcal thinking and problem solving. All core areas of chemical engineering are covered, including reaction engineering, thermodynamics, mass transfer (diffusion), and heat transfer. A capstone design course, as well as a two semester unit operations course, will allow you to implement the ideas and skills which you've developed in a hands-on environment. An overview of the various options within the curriculum can found here: Undergraduate Curriculum Options

Many interesting electives are available, including courses in Nanotechnology, Environmental Engineering, and Process Systems Engineering. You can access the current Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Brochure here. The brochure contains answers to frequently asked questions as well as other important information.

Undergraduate Research in Chemical Engineering

The University of Kansas is committed to providing research experiences to undergraduate students as part of the educational process. It is a stated goal of KU that each graduating student should have a research experience. The Department is very much in support of this goal.

We have an in house Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program and also operate an NSF funded REU program. Most of our students do their research experience at KU, but we also have programs at overseas locations (Germany, Holland). The REU programs are summer programs and generally pay $ 5000 for a 10 week summer experience. Many of our students also perform research during their regular academic semesters. We allow up to 6 credits of research to count as engineering electives for the undergraduate degree.

Student Housing

The Department of Student Housing at KU provides students with a number of housing options. Many students find that these options provide for suitable living arrangements on campus. For more information, visit the Department of Student Housing's website.
