This page contains information for students who will be selected for the current (Summer 2006) program.
Using information provided on your REU application form, we will submit your admissions forms and enroll you in C&PE 615: Engineering Problems (1-3 Cr), prior to your arrival at KU. This will allow you to have an official student status at KU and allow you to obtain an ID that can be used at the dining halls, libraries and recreational facilities. If you want the credit transferred to your home institution, you may need to make arrangements in advance! Once you arrive on campus, you will receive your photo ID card at the KU Card Center in the Kansas Union, as part of orientation.
Students staying on campus will be housed in Templin Hall, which has double and quad suites. If you wish to have mail forwarded or want to notify people of your summer address, here is what you should give:
Your room number (and associated telephone number) will be forwarded to you via email, as soon as it is assigned.
Transportation to/from KU-Lawrence
For those flying: The closest commercial airport is Kansas City International Airport. There is a shuttle service from the airport that can take you directly to KU at Lawrence (approximately $30 each way). The shuttle will drop you at Lewis residence hall. You do not need a reservation for airport pick-up (though it probably wouldn't hurt), but you will need a reservation for going to the airport on departure. Because of time between shuttle departures and the traveling time, it may take 1-2 hours to reach KU from the airport.
For those driving: Lawrence is located west of Kansas City off I-70. From the South, it is also accessible (more directly) via I-35 N, I-435 W and K-10 W. For specific driving directions, I will refer you to http://www.mapquest.com
Travel Subsidies/Assistance: You can receive a travel subsidy. The amounts may vary depending on need and available funds. To receive this subsidy, you will need to book and pay for your own flight, and present a receipt upon arrival for processing your reimbursement. In addition to airfare, travel subsidies can also include your ground transportation to/from Lawrence (e.g. shuttle service cost, personal mileage).
Basic
Description:
All students who will not be living with parents/relatives will be housed
at Lewis Hall in Quad Suites on the KU-Lawrence Campus. The suites
include two bedrooms, a central living room area with wet bar, a large
walk-in closet, and a bathroom with shower and two sinks. There is space
for a small refrigerator, but this must be supplied by students. Each
resident is provided with a bed, mattress, desk, desk chair, trash can,
and window blinds. Bedding/linens are not provided!! For
more information, see the housing website:
http://www.ku.edu/~dshweb/
Connections - Phone: The residence hall rooms come with an active on campus phone line (but no actual phone/handset). Long distance service can be ordered, but it will likely be more economical to use discount calling cards for long distance.
Connections - Internet: Also, the quad suites have 4 ethernet ports. Lewis requires a 10-Base-T line cord which connects your computer to the network jack. The currently listed cost for the activation of each port is $14/month, and this service must be ordered, before it is activated. Students may wish to share a single port to reduce costs. Note, also, that all labs will have internet connections for checking email, etc.
Connections - Television: The residence hall rooms also have active cable television ports, but no television set.
Check-in and Check-out: Check-in begins on Wednesday, May 26 at 2 PM, and checkout should be complete by Wednesday, August 4 at 11 AM.
Basic Description: Dining privileges are provided for on-campus participants. Primary services are provided at Mrs. E's (Ekdahl dining commons), but the first two weeks are part of an interim period before the beginning of the official summer semester. More information on dining services will be provided as details become available. We want to make sure you are well-fed.

Survival:
You should plan for generally warm weather during the summer months.
Temperatures will likely be in 80's (F) or higher, and skies will mostly
be sunny. But summer storms are also common, so you should have some long
pants and warmer clothes (and umbrella), just in case. Shorts will be
comfortable most of the time and should be appropriate in most labs, most
of the time. For some experiments, you may be asked to wear long pants
and closed-toe shoes, so please bring one or two pair. In addition to
clothes and basic sundries, you should bring the following things:
The Ammenities: Depending on your mode of travel, and your determination, you might also consider bringing things such as a computer, television set, and bicycle.
For additional maps of Lawrence, Kansas City and beyond, consult http://www.mapquest.com.
Getting to KU From I-70, take exit 202 for US 59 South/West, which becomes Iowa Street. Turn left on 15th street Take the second first street to the right (Engel Road, not the visitor's center). It will bring you in front of Lewis Hall (first large building on left. If you stay on 15th street, as you come to the bottom of the hill, Learned Hall (and expansion construction site) is on your left. If you have any questions, let us know.
Getting to KU From K-10 west: K-10 becomes 23rd Street as it enters Lawrence. Stay on the main drag, until you turn right on Naismith Drive. It's the second light west of Louisiana St. Follow Naismith to the stop sign at a T in the road and turn left. At the next stop sign, turn left on Irving Road. The parking garage/department is on your left. Learned Hall is across the parking lot (and 15th St) on your right. Continue up the hill on Irving Road, and turn right at Engel Road (you'll be between the residence halls). Lewis hall is the second building on your right.
Parking on Campus during the Summer
On-Campus Participants: If you are driving to KU, you can park in any residence hall lot without a parking permit. The Parking Department will not ticket those parking lots during the summer, unless you are parked at a meter, in a red/blue zone spot, or in a fire lane. Also, you can park at any metered spot or in a garage, if you pay the required fee.
Thus, unless you really want to park at other locations on campus, it will not be necessary to get a KU Parking Permit.
Off-Campus Participants: Since you will be driving to KU, you will also need to consider your options. For those coming to KU, you can also park in any residence hall parking lot. The Parking Department will not ticket those parking lots during the summer, unless you are parked at a meter, in a red/blue zone spot, or in a fire lane. This may mean a bit more of a walk, but you may choose to make the walk to avoid purchasing a parking permit.
Obtaining a Parking Permit: All participants will be registered students on the KU-Lawrence campus, and can obtain a yellow (student) parking permit at the KU Parking Office (in the garage next to Allen Field House and near the engineering building, Learned Hall). Cost of the permit for the entire summer is approximately $40. When obtaining your permit, you can park in the garage, and after you have purchased the permit, you will be given a "free pass" to exit the garage.
Hoofing it around Lawrence: The residence halls are within walking distance of downtown Lawrence, with shops and restaurants lining "main street", Massechussetts Avenue. There are also some shops off Jayhawk blvd, near the Kansas Union, and at Iowa and 23rd Streets.; This will require some time, but it's healthy and environmentally sound!
Two-Wheeling: Bicycles will help you get to those local and more remote locations with less time and effort. If you bring your own, you can go just about anywhere in Lawrence. Upon request a bicycle or two for general use by Chemical Engineering REU students will be provided, but it (they) will have to be shared.
KU on Wheels: The university operates a campus bus system (KU on Wheels) that goes well beyond the campus. The schedule may be much reduced in the summer, however, so it may not be worth the cost of a monthly pass. However, this system could help you get to more remote locations for $1 a ride. For more information see: KU on Wheels
Lawrence Transportation "T": The City of Lawrence also operates a separate bus system to help get you around. These rides are only 50 cents! For more information see: http://www.lawrencetransit.org/guide/
A Friend Can Help! Some REU students may drive to KU, and thus have automobile transportation. Make a friend and catch a ride where you need/want to go! Note that there are at least 5 other REU programs at KU this summer. This greatly expands your pool of friends, especially for weekend activities!
Information for Off-Campus Students
Because you will be driving to/from campus each day, we encourage you to acquire a KU parking permit. There is no direct compensation to off-campus students for the parking permit, mileage, and other commuting costs or for housing and meals. However, you will receive an additional stipend of $400 to offset some of these expenses.
