European Study Abroad Opportunities for Summer 2010

Opportunities exist for two suitably qualified CPE students to spend a summer semester at the Technical University of Lodz, Poland conducting research projects in Chemical Engineering. The projects concerns the study of momentum and mass transfer processes involving electrically charged drops in liquid-liquid systems.
Lodz is Poland's second city located approximately 80 miles south west of Warsaw and is an excellent cultural centre offering easy access to Poland's extensive historical attractions, and to all of central Europe.
The students will be hosted by the International Faculty of Engineering at the Technical University with accommodation and academic supervision provided. Financial support for travel etc. may be available through the KU School of Engineering support for Study Abroad, application forms available at http://engr.ku.edu/forms/.
The first project will be mostly laboratory based and will involve experiments into intensified separation of biological products using liquid-liquid extraction. The technique exploits the electrostatic spraying of micro-droplets of aqueous solutions containing biological products into an extracting solvent. Experimental facilities have recently been developed for the project in the Technical University Lodz as part of an on-going collaboration between the two universities (Dr Weatherley(KU), Dr Scurto (KU) and Dr Petera (Technical University of Lodz)).
The second project is concerned with the computational modeling of the electrostatically intensified spraying of liquid droplets during the production of biodiesel. The student will work with Dr. Petera's group at the Technical University of Lodz, using a novel finite element modeling technique developed by him. The work will in close collaboration with the experimental group at KU.
In both projects you will have the opportunity to participate in this exciting "front-edge" research and at the same time have the opportunity to travel and enjoy some superb European culture.
